TD Martin Kenny calls for transport policing after train shotgun incident

Sinn Féin TD Martin Kenny has called for a dedicated transport policing unit in the wake of a major security incident on the Sligo–Dublin train. Speaking to Shannonside Radio, Kenny described the situation as “alarming” and emphasized the urgent need to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

The incident unfolded January 8 when a male passenger in his 50s was observed carrying a suspected shotgun. Gardaí launched a large-scale operation, intercepting the train at Connolly Station around 6:20 PM. The train was evacuated, and armed officers conducted a security sweep.

The man was arrested at the scene but has since been released without charge. Gardaí have confirmed that a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, and investigations are ongoing.

Kenny’s comments on Shannonside underscore growing concerns about public safety on Ireland’s transport network. The TD reiterated his call for a dedicated transport policing service to prevent similar incidents and protect the public.
