Leitrim has been significantly impacted by the devastating Storm Éowyn, as communities grapple with extensive power outages and severe weather disruptions. With gusts recorded as high as 183 km/h in other parts of the country, the storm has left no corner of Ireland untouched, including Leitrim’s key towns and rural areas.
Paul Hand, of ESB’s Strategy Innovation and Transformation division, highlighted the localized destruction in Leitrim. “There is significant damage across Leitrim; it’s everywhere,” he said. Power outages have hit areas such as Mohill, Carrick-on-Shannon, and Carrigallen particularly hard, leaving thousands without electricity.
ESB Networks has confirmed that Storm Éowyn has caused record-breaking levels of outages across Ireland, with over 800,000 homes and businesses affected nationwide. Locally, efforts are underway to restore power, but the utility warns that it could take a week before full restoration is achieved in some areas.
Brian Tapley, Manager at ESB Networks, acknowledged the scale of the challenge: "This is a storm like no other in terms of power outages and infrastructure damage."
Met Éireann has issued a Status Red wind warning for the northern half of the country, including Leitrim, cautioning residents that the worst may still be ahead. People are urged to avoid all non-essential travel and remain indoors for safety. Vodafone has reported broadband outages affecting 90,000 homes, compounding communication difficulties during the crisis.
Residents can monitor Powercheck.ie for the latest updates on power restoration and safety advisories. Emergency services and repair crews are working tirelessly to assess and mitigate the damage, but patience is advised as the situation evolves.
Leitrim, along with the rest of the island, is bracing for continued challenges as Storm Éowyn’s full force is felt.
