The issue of dog fouling bins was raised once again at a meeting of Ballinamore municipal district.
Cllr Brendan Barry proposed a motion calling for Leitrim County Council, Waterways Ireland and Leitrim Animal Welfare to collaborate in providing dog fouling bins and signage along the canal walk in between Kilclare and Leitrim Village.
“It’s an issue in every place but there’s no bins at all out there and if one or two were provided people would have less excuses for not looking after their dogs,” Cllr Barry said.
Cllr McGloin seconded the motion, stating that the bins installed across the county are an effective system.
A response from the Head of Finance and Water Services explained that there are 24 dog fouling bins in Leitrim that are emptied, cleaned and restocked with bags on a weekly basis under contract by Leitrim Animal Welfare.
The reply further stated that the Council will be reviewing the current contract with Leitrim Animal Welfare and will assess the need for additional bins based on available resources.
Several other areas have also requested dog fouling bins, and any decision to install extra bins will depend on local needs and availability of resources.
“I’d hope that an area with none whatsoever would get some priority over areas where there are some,” Cllr Barry concluded.
