RIP: Popular Leitrim musician missed greatly by all in his community

Tributes are pouring in for popular Leitrim man Michael Toomey who lived in Leitrim Village, Co. Leitrim.

Michael passed away on February 4th 2025 peacefully in the Shannon Lodge Nursing Home, Rooskey, surrounded by his loving family.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sister Sr. Margaret-Ann, sister-in-law Kathleen Toomey, brother-in-law Paddy Daly, nephews, nieces, grand- nephews & nieces, great-grand nephew, the extended Deeney & Toomey families, a wide circle of friends agus Cairde Cheoil.

Michael will be missed greatly by the whole community as they remember listening to him sing and play his guitar in local pubs in Leitrim.

"I had the privilege and pleasure of playing music with Michael for years in the Ancorage pub in Carrick On Shannon among other places and at his care home in Shannon Lodge. He had a unique and special singing voice which we all loved and treasured. He was one of a kind, respectable, gentle, and softly spoken. I loved our chats and found peace and calmness in listening to his stories and his words of wisdom. Michael will forever have a place and song in my heart. Heaven has gained an angel. Rest in peace my dear friend," a heartfelt tribute was paid to Mr Toomey.

"So sad, have great memories of him from Cryans pub where he used to come in & play.... bless him.." a Facebook user said.

"I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the extended Toomey Family. Michael was a Great Friend and customer. We had breakfast together a lot over the years in Crynns also the Bush Hotel. Anna and I went to most of his music sessions, Michael singing the Cliffs of Duneen. The West Awake and many more. Lovely Memories. R.I.P Michael," another tribute said.

Another tribute said, "I am so sorry to hear Michael has passed away. He did computer work regularly in Donegal Oil in the 1980s when I worked there. He was a lovely very clever quiet gentleman. It was a pleasure working with him. Deepest sympathy to you all. Rest in peace Mike".

Funeral Arrangements:

Michael will rest in repose at Glennon's Funeral Home, Longford on Saturday (Feb. 8th) from 5:00pm, concluding with Vigil Prayers at 6:30pm.

Mass of Christian Burial on Sunday at 11:00am in St. Joseph's Church, Rathmullen, Co. Donegal, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.
