Manorhamilton municipal district returned for its first meeting following Storm Éowyn, with discussions focusing on forestry and improved preparations for future storms.
One widely supported motion called for grant aid to help elderly and vulnerable households install generator switchover switches.
Cllr Pádraig Fallon, who proposed the motion, asked that the MD make contact with the Department of Housing to explore the possibility.
He emphasised that such a measure would provide essential support during future storms and power outages, suggesting it could be introduced alongside existing grants like Housing Aid for the Elderly.
Having consulted several electricians, Cllr Fallon said the cost of installing generator switchover switches varies between €500 to €800.
“It’s something that most definitely needs to be done in houses where there are elderly or vulnerable people like families with sick children,” Cllr Fallon said.
Cllr Eddie Mitchell pointed out that Northern Ireland has already implemented similar measures, describing the process as relatively straightforward.
“We need to have some sort of plan for vulnerable people even if it’s community based,” he commented.
Cllr Mary Bohan supported the motion but urged that it needs to be done safely and properly, noting that accidents have taken place with generators.
A response from the Director of Services, Housing and Community, Corporate Services and Cultural and Emergency Services explained that the matter could be raised with the relevant Government Department.
However, it may need to be considered in a national policy framework for all local authorities.
The reply also noted that the revised Housing Grant Scheme does not provide grant aid for such installations.
