Concerns raised over condition of protection accommodation in Leitrim

Concerns have been raised about the conditions of properties used for Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection or International Protection in Leitrim.

Cllr Paddy Farrell proposed a motion seeking to clarify the role of Leitrim County Council in inspecting, maintaining and ensuring the cleanliness of these properties.

“A lot of these conditions are left in a deplorable state when people vacate. I’d like to find out who is responsible for this,” Cllr Farrell said.

A response to the motion confirmed that Leitrim County Council has no role in inspections related to the upkeep and cleanliness of these properties.

“I think there should be some way of controlling it. At times there seems to be no respect for the accommodation,” he added.

Cllr Farrell remarked that he was not “having a go” at those availing of these properties but emphasised that they should be left in the condition as they are found.

Cllr Enda Stenson seconded the motion, and also questioned who is responsible for the inspections.

Mary Quinn, Director of Services for Housing, Corporate Services, Community and Cultural Services said that the contract is between International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) and the property owner or provider.

Cllr Farrell suggested writing to IPAS regarding the issue, highlighting that some properties have sustained damage. This proposal was agreed upon.
