Councillors ‘disappointed’ by lack of investment in Leitrim train station

Leitrim councillors have voiced disappointment following news of investment by Iarnród Éireann in train stations across the Shannon side area - excluding Carrick-on-Shannon station.

Cllr Paddy Farrell urged Leitrim County Council to make contact with Iarnród Éireann to push for upgrades at Carrick-on-Shannon station.

He highlighted that Carrick-on-Shannon is one of the busiest stops on the Sligo to Dublin line, yet suffers from inadequate parking and with other facilities needing enhancements, including toilets.

“I think we need to write to them again and remind them that Carrick is one of the busiest stations and we need car parking and improved toilet facilities,” Cllr Farrell said, especially emphasising the need for better parking options.

Cllr Cormac Flynn seconded the motion, citing an incident involving a person who received an €80 fine for parking incorrectly at the station - and it was their first time using their free travel card for the train.

He said the individual had mobility issues and had no other parking option. “We definitely need more car parking there,” he said.

Cllr Maeve Reynolds also voiced her concerns, stating she was “very disappointed” to see investment in other stations, while Carrick-on-Shannon was overlooked. She also highlighted the issue of inadequate toilet facilities.

“Toilet facilities are needed for large groups leaving from the town and walking out to the train station, using elsewhere as toilet facilities,” she said.

Separately, Cllr Farrell tabled a motion requesting the District Engineer to examine the R207 road in the general Drumgorman area, on the Drumshanbo side of the R280.

He noted that markings and signage need to be updated for the safety of locals and road users.

A response from the Roads department confirmed that the district office will review the road markings and signage, and replace the delineators at Drumgorman R207.
