Allen Gaels remain top of the group and favourites in the Smith’s Monumental Leitrim Intermediate Championship after a ruthless victory over Kiltubrid on Saturday evening.

“Happy enough to get the win that is what championship is about,” said Allen Gaels manager James Flynn, though he admitted there were aspects of their performance that didn’t fully satisfy him despite the emphatic 24-point margin.

“We left a lot of chance there we didn’t really keep the score ticking like we talk about in that aspect of things,” he said.

The Drumshanbo side looked relentless throughout, hunting down Kiltubrid players, forcing turnovers high up the pitch, and pushing for scores long after the game had been decided as a contest.

When asked if last year’s shock defeat to Melvin Gaels in the Intermediate Final inspired a more ruthless edge, Flynn was clear:

“Last year was a freak, a lot of things happened, for one reason or another that shouldn’t have happened, but as I have said before, those boys will be the better for that.

“Hard lesson but that is what life is all about, at the end of the day we went back into the dressing room and we had lost a match, we have come out of a lot worse, so we came out of it stronger and long term that group of Allen Gaels footballers will be all the better for it.”
