Residents urged to conserve water as South Leitrim supply struggles continue

Uisce Éireann has warned that if reservoir levels do not improve, nighttime water restrictions may be implemented across South Leitrim.

Residents urged to conserve water as South Leitrim supply struggles continue

Recurring water supply issues in South Leitrim have been highlighted once again as Uisce Éireann urges customers across the area to conserve water and protect the supply.

Uisce Éireann issued the plea following what they describe as an increase in water usage by households and businesses, coupled with water main bursts throughout September, highlighting how the supply in South Leitrim remains on a knife’s edge time and time again.

Kevin Love of Uisce Éireann stated that there has been a “noticeable increase” in water demand across the South Leitrim areas in recent weeks.

The South Leitrim Regional Water Scheme, which supplies customers in Ballinamore, Keshcarrigan, Drumshanbo, Carrick-on-Shannon, Mohill, and Carrigallen, is experiencing increased demand, leading to pressure reductions.

“Any reduction that customers can make in their usage can collectively result in significant supply improvements for all homes and businesses. We would also appeal to customers to report any leaks to us on 1800 278 278,” said Love.

“We have been working hard to maintain supply for our customers; however, we may have to move to nighttime restrictions if reservoir levels do not improve in the coming days to ensure we can meet peak time demand across all of South Leitrim,” he added.

Uisce Éireann has stated that they are planning a €32 million upgrade to the Carrick-on-Shannon water treatment plant, which is already operating at full capacity. However, due to planning, land acquisition, and other requirements, the new section of the plant is not expected to be commissioned until 2030.

There is also a commitment of 2.85 km of replacement works planned for 2026 on the Fenagh to Ardrum line, but water supply issues in South Leitrim are expected to remain recurring for some time, with significant improvements unlikely until the upgrade at the Carrick water treatment plant is complete.

Uisce Éireann has provided tips for conserving water, suggesting that customers use a rose head watering can to water plants instead of a hose or sprinkler, wash their cars with a bucket and sponge, turn off taps while brushing their teeth, take showers instead of baths, and ensure dishwashers and washing machines are fully loaded before use.
