'Unfamiliar motorist could turn over a vehicle' at a location in Aughavas, says Leitrim councillor

Cllr Paddy O'Rourke said that "delineators won't keep a stranger from toppling over but they do alert you to the fact there is a potential problem on the road and signage likewise but ultimately more significant works will have to be undertaken there."

'Unfamiliar motorist could turn over a vehicle' at a location in Aughavas, says Leitrim councillor

Leitrim County Council said it would erect delineators or advisory signage along the stretch

An "unfamiliar motorist could turn over a vehicle" at a location in Aughavas, a Leitrim councillor said at a recent meeting adding that the danger spot has "deteriorated three fold in the last 18 months."

Cllr Paddy O'Rourke had asked that the "necessary steps to make safe the road from opposite the Dugout bar in Aughavas on the 201 toward Augharan cross, particularly the part of the road going through the townlands of Correneary and Killafee where substantial subsidence has taken place in recent times (possibly exasperated by the dry summer). There are stretches of this road passing over a bog where an unfamiliar motorist could easily overturn their car or go off road and there have already been several near misses at this location."

The official response said that the L-1501 is a public road linking Corrawaleen to Aughavas adding that this road is currently not on the council's 3 year roadworks programme and they will maintain the road and erect delineators or advisory signage along this stretch.

Cllr O'Rourke responded that "delineators won't keep a stranger from toppling over but they do alert you to the fact there is a potential problem on the road and signage likewise but ultimately more significant works will have to be undertaken there."

Cllr Róisín Kenny seconded the motion saying she had contacted the previous district engineer when "a lorry had turned over and a lot of the neighbours were looking for signage when I was canvassing. There one or two reflective things there; it's not enough."

She added: "Additional pull-in bays would be help because if you meet anything, you are going down the verge."
