‘Real Change’: High-speed broadband is now available to thousands in Leitrim, Gov

National Broadband Ireland (NBI) urges residents to register online to receive updates as rollout progresses across the county

‘Real Change’: High-speed broadband is now available to thousands in Leitrim, Gov

More than 10,000 homes, businesses, and farms across Leitrim can now access high-speed fibre broadband as part of the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), with over 2,700 premises already connected to the new National Broadband Ireland (NBI) network.

National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company delivering the Fibre-to-the-Home network on behalf of the Government, confirmed that 12,000 premises in County Leitrim are included in the State’s Intervention Area.

The rollout will deliver minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second to homes, businesses, farms, and schools — representing a Government investment of €46 million in the county.

A total of 10,088 premises across Leitrim can now pre-order or order reliable, high-speed broadband, with 2,749 connections already made. Rural communities such as Kinlough and Carrigallen are among those benefiting from the latest phase of the rollout.

TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer of National Broadband Ireland, said the project is aimed at transforming life in rural areas.

“We’re proud to see over 10,000 homes and businesses in Co. Leitrim can now avail of a high-speed connection through the NBI network™. This includes the rural surrounds of Kinlough and Carrigallen.

“The National Broadband Plan rollout is enabling real change in how rural communities live and work, from online learning and business growth to better access to health and public services. We’re encouraging everyone in Leitrim to check their Eircode on nbi.ie and stay up to date as the rollout progresses.”

Residents are encouraged to visit nbi.ie and check their Eircode to see if their home or business is ready to connect.

National Broadband Ireland has now passed almost 420,000 homes, farms, and businesses nationwide, with over 148,000 connected so far. The network’s average take-up rate of 35% is ahead of projections and international comparisons, reaching over 50% in areas where the network has been live for 18 months.

The NBI website is updated regularly to show estimated connection dates, and residents can sign up for email alerts to receive updates for their area.

As a wholesale network operator, NBI does not sell broadband directly to customers. Instead, it provides the network to a range of Retail Service Providers (RSPs).

Currently, 72 providers have signed up to sell services on the NBI network™, with 66 certified to connect customers. A full list of participating providers is available at nbi.ie.

In advance of the full Fibre-to-the-Home rollout, NBI has established 955 Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) nationwide. These include public access sites such as sports clubs, community centres, and tourist locations, offering free high-speed internet in rural areas.

BCPs are seen as a key part of bridging the digital divide — supporting remote work, online education, and rural enterprise while communities await full fibre rollout. For more information or to check connection availability, visit www.nbi.ie
