A section of the waterway leading to Leitrim Village will be closed from November 2025 until February 2026 while improvement works are carried out, according to Waterways Ireland.
The closure will run from Lock 9 in Kilclare to Lock 16 in Leitrim Village, beginning on 3 November 2025 and continuing until the end of February 2026.

The works will include the replacement of lock gates, repairs to lock chambers and masonry, and upgrades to lock operating mechanisms to improve safety, reliability, and ease of operation ahead of the 2026 boating season.
During this period, no passage by boat will be possible between these locations, and visitors will not be able to enter the waterfront marina through Lock 16 on the north-east side.
Waterways Ireland, the cross-border body responsible for Ireland’s inland waterways, said it regrets any inconvenience caused and thanks all users for their cooperation and patience while these essential works are undertaken to safeguard the long-term integrity of the navigation.
