Mohill scouts warming up around a fire
The Mohill Scouts, officially the 4th Leitrim Scout Group, are calling on the people of Mohill, the wider area, and Leitrim County Council to help them find a permanent place to call home.
The group is appealing for help in finding a hall, building or site that could serve as their long-term “Den” for scouts that have been part of life in Mohill for more than 90 years.
The very first local Scout was invested back in 1932 in the Canon Donohue Memorial Hall, starting a proud tradition that has guided generations of young people to learn teamwork, confidence, outdoor skills and community spirit.
Today, the Mohill Scouts are thriving, with more than 70 members across Beavers (ages 6–8), Cubs (9–11), Scouts (12–15) and Ventures (15–17). Over 20 dedicated volunteers give their time every week to run meetings, camps and activities that help local children and teenagers grow in confidence and independence.
For years, the group has relied on the generosity of local schools, community organisations and halls who have shared their spaces so that Scouting could continue in the town. The group say they are deeply grateful for that support and goodwill.
However, as numbers continue to grow, the challenge of operating from temporary venues has become more difficult. Without a permanent base, the Scouts have no secure storage for equipment, no dedicated space for training, and no firm foundation for future growth.

Each member already pays more than €100 a year to Scouting Ireland, as well as a small weekly subscription, so families cannot be asked to take on the financial burden of a new building.
“We are so thankful for every hall and venue that has welcomed us,” said Group Leader Kim Taylor. “But we can’t build for the future without a permanent home. Mohill has an incredible community spirit, and we’re asking for help to find a proper base where Scouting can grow and thrive.”,
A suitable space would ideally include a large hall or activity room, access to toilets, safe drop-off facilities, storage for camping and adventure gear, and, if possible, some land that could accommodate temporary or modular structures in the future.
“We’re open to any ideas,” said one volunteer. “It could be a shared space, a long-term lease, or even a small site we could develop. What matters most is giving our young people a safe, steady home where they can learn, play and give back to the community.”
Anyone who might be able to help or offer suggestions is encouraged to contact the Mohill Scouts through their local leaders or via Scouting Ireland.
