ESB Networks has begun drone patrols in targeted areas in Leitrim, as well as Cavan, as part of its Winter 2025 Grid Resilience Programme with the patrols across the electricity distribution network set to begin on 1 October and take place over an eight-week period.
The patrols are focused on identifying potential risks to the electricity network, particularly in rural and forested regions and the aerial inspections feature high-resolution imaging and GPS mapping capabilities allowing ESB Networks teams to proactively address issues.
ESB Networks Customer Delivery and ESB Networks Asset Management teams will be working alongside partner contractors Engineers with Drones to carry out the patrols.
Speaking on the delivery of the patrols, Callum Petford, Networks Assets, ESB Networks said: “Conducting drone patrols is a key part of our Winter Resilience Programme. By combining advanced technology with local expertise, we’re ensuring continuity of supply for our customers. Drone patrols will be taking place in Aughawillan, Aughnasheelin, Ballinamore, Carrigallen, Corlough, Dernacreeve, Drumcoura, Drumreilly, Newtowngore and Swanlinbar over the next eight weeks”. The ESB Networks Winter Resilience Programme is part of ESB’s broader strategy to ensure a secure, reliable electricity network, especially during the winter months when extreme weather events are more frequent.
