Leitrim County Council is set to conduct a survey to gather information on the health of trees in an area of south Leitrim.

This follows a motion put forward by Cllr Irene Guckian-Rabbitte, who requested that the Council assess the health and safety of five poplar trees for potential risk on Council-owned land along the L1600 beside the playground in Dromod.

She explained that concerns about the strength of the trees had been brought to her attention, particularly in light of recent storms, with local residents wondering if the trees will withstand future adverse weather conditions.

Cllr Guckian-Rabbitte also noted that the trees are very tall and may pose a risk as they are located near property.

Her motion was seconded by Cllr Sean McGowan, who agreed that the trees are very tall and should be cut by half. “With the storms we’re having, it’s a danger,” he said.

Cllr Maeve Reynolds also supported the motion and added that the trees across the road from the playground by the gazebo should also be included in the review.

A Council response confirmed that, as the trees are Council property, a survey will be carried out to gather information on the health and safety of the trees and surrounding areas.

If remedial action is required, an experienced tree surgeon will be engaged to carry out any necessary works.
