HSE West and North West are urging all eligible people in Leitrim to get vaccinated against the flu. Recent data shows that the number of flu cases reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HSPC) has more than doubled, indicating that flu is now spreading rapidly within communities.
Hospitals are seeing an increase in people presenting with flu symptoms, which is adding further pressure to already busy healthcare services.
Locally, Sligo University Hospital has been experiencing significant strain as admissions rise due to flu.
According to the INMO trolley watch on December 8, there were 37 people waiting for beds in Sligo University Hospital, 10 in Cavan General Hospital, and 32 in Letterkenny University Hospital.
The HSE has also confirmed that more than 500 people have been hospitalised nationwide with flu.

Those who are eligible for flu vaccination include people aged over 60 years, children aged two to 17 years, individuals with underlying medical conditions, and healthcare workers.
Free flu vaccines are available in participating pharmacies and GP clinics. In Leitrim, multiple pharmacies listed on the HSE website provide the flu vaccine.
These include Boots in Carrick-on-Shannon; All Care Pharmacy in Drumshanbo; RJS Pharmacy in Drumshanbo; All Care Pharmacy in Ballinamore; and Manor Chemist’s in Manorhamilton. Further information is available here.
People are being reminded to watch for symptoms such as a high temperature of 38 degrees or above, aches, pains, headache, sore throat, and cough, and to be considerate when using hospital services as emergency departments are expected to become even busier.
HSE injury units are available for sprains, breaks, and minor wounds, and people are encouraged to use out-of-hours GP services and seek advice from pharmacists where appropriate.
