There was huge excited this week at Drumlease National School when Ray Foley from Today FM along with JP Gilbourne came to host the hugely popular Ray Foley Show!
Speaking to the Leitrim Observer, principal Marie Brennan explained that the children had put a huge amount of effort into the school's Christmas market, starting preparations back in September. "Our sixth class pupils did a junior entrepreneur project where they were looking at the business model of arts and crafts so they were making wreathes, knitting hats and making things like Christmas logs. There was also a huge selection hand crafted jewellery pieces. They have been working on this since September planning and coming up with ideas for what would work well and what would sell well."
She explained that one of the teachers decided to reach out to Today FM and tell them about all the work that the children had been doing in the run-up to the festive season.

Ms Brennan continued that all funds raised are going towards the school that has recently been granted funding for three additional classroom extensions with school set to see the construction of a new mainstream classroom, a special education classroom and a special education tuition room.

Ms Brennan said: "We are in the process of land purchase and also funding for school development to future-proof so all funds that we raised are going back towards the school. We really were on a high and are still coming down from that. It was such a wonderful experience for all of our pupils."

Ray and JP arrived at around 11.30 am to get set up for the show, Ms Brennan told us. "It was fabulous to see the whole behind-the-scenes of the radio programme. They recorded live from the school hall where the market was from 2pm to 4.30pm. We also had Santa there and he was interviewed at the end. We had Santa's Grotto where all our children and the parents volunteered to help with hot chocolate and pancakes. We really had a massive community effort and everyone was helping out. Every child got a little present from Santa, all 152 pupils."

She said the well-known presenting duo spoke to the children and were even given a very special gift. "Then Ray and JP spoke to children at the different stands about what they were selling. One pupil had made a beautiful Today FM logo to give to them. It was fantastic and it was such a huge celebration for our school because these things don't happen too often! It was a huge honour."
