Six new safety camera zones will be operational in Leitrim from January 1 as part of a major nationwide expansion announced by An Garda Síochána.
The measures, unveiled by Gardaí on December 23, aim to reduce speed-related collisions, lessen injuries and ultimately save lives.
In total, 390 new safety camera zones will come into operation in January, bringing the total number nationwide to 1,901.
As of December 23, 186 people have been killed on Irish roads. Tragically, this represents the highest level of road deaths in over a decade. On the same date in 2024, the figure stood at 167.

"The majority of drivers on Irish roads obey the speed limits, keeping themselves, their passengers and other road users safer. There is a small persistent cohort of selfish, dangerous drivers who choose to drive in excess of the posted speed limit,” said Assistant Commissioner Catharina Gunne of Roads Policing and Community Engagement.
“These drivers put themselves and members of their community at risk, particularly children, older people, cyclists and other motorists.
"An Garda Síochána’s priority is to ensure that the vast majority of people who use the roads responsibly are not put in danger by this minority of reckless drivers who continue to drive at excessive speed,” she added.
Safety camera zones are identified high-risk locations and can include school safety zones, community engagement request zones and road works safety zones.

Locations are selected following an analysis of collated Garda data from fatal, serious and minor road traffic collisions, as well as consideration of locations of concern highlighted by local communities through Garda community engagement.
