Leitrim fire chief issues advice to avoid house fires over holidays

Electrical fires linked to festive decorations and overloaded sockets remain a major concern

With festive decorations up and winter candles burning, the Christmas period and into the New Year is prime time for house fires.

Electrical fires at this time of year are a common occurrence, often caused by too many plugs being fitted to one socket. Between 2020 and 2025, almost 1,000 house fires were caused by electrical equipment in Ireland, according to FireIreland.ie.

Martin Bond, the senior assistant chief fire officer in Leitrim, issued some advice to homeowners to keep themselves safe this holiday season while speaking to Shannonside.

“You can use extension leads, but we don't go for the daisy chain with one extension lead onto another and another. We will stick with one if totally necessary.”

“Ideally, it will be one plug to one socket, but if you are using an extension lead it must be CE marked, i.e. it has met the correct standard of manufacturing.”
