Timeline confirmed for long-awaited accessibility works at Leitrim train station

Iarnród Éireann has confirmed a timeline for the delivery of long-awaited accessibility works at Dromod train station, with construction proposed to commence in Q3 of this year.

The confirmation follows a motion submitted by Cllr Sean McGowan in October 2025, in which he sought a clear timeframe from Iarnród Éireann for the installation of a new footbridge and lift at the station.

Correspondence received from Iarnród Éireann, and discussed at the January meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District, outlined that planning permission for the project was granted in April 2025.

It further stated that the detailed design and tender documentation were completed in Q4 2025. Subject to funding approval from the National Transport Authority, the tender is due to be issued in Q1 of this year, with works scheduled to commence in Q3.

The planned accessibility works will include the construction of a mobility-impaired access structure, specifically designed to support individuals with mobility impairments.

This will consist of a pair of staircases, each with two flights, along with freestanding lift shafts to significantly enhance accessibility at the station.

In addition, a new walkway and supporting portals will be developed as part of the project. The works will result in the removal of 10 existing parking spaces, the relocation of three designated parking bays, and the installation of a new waiting shelter on platform two.

Cllr Sean McGowan, who has been advocating for accessibility improvements at Dromod train station for many years, welcomed the response provided by Iarnród Éireann.

“This is positive news and something we’ve been talking about for a long number of years,” said Cllr McGowan. “It’s positive news for all the customers of Iarnród Éireann and people travelling from Dromod.”

He highlighted ongoing concerns with the current footbridge at the station, noting that it presents difficulties for older people and those travelling with children. “It’s just not safe,” he said.

“This will be a huge improvement. Dromod is a very busy station so I welcome this,” concluded Cllr McGowan.
