A cold case review is now under way into the death of Leitrim pensioner Liam Farrell, as the sixth anniversary of his passing is marked today.

Mr Farrell, who was 87, was found deceased at the rear of his home near Rooskey on January 12, 2020. The circumstances surrounding his death have remained a source of deep concern and unanswered questions for his family ever since.

Six years on, relatives say the launch of a formal cold case review has brought renewed hope that the full circumstances of what happened that night will finally be established.

The review will involve a re-examination of material gathered during the original investigation, including witness accounts and decisions taken in the immediate aftermath of Mr Farrell’s death. Gardaí have confirmed the case is being assessed under updated cold case procedures.

For the Farrell family, the anniversary is a difficult milestone.

They have consistently maintained that their father’s death warrants closer scrutiny and have spent years campaigning for a comprehensive review, refusing to allow the case to fade from public consciousness.

Speaking as the anniversary was marked, the family said they remain focused on one thing only: truth.

“Our father deserves answers,” they said. “We have lived with uncertainty for six years, and we hope this review will finally bring clarity.”

Mr Farrell was well known locally, and his death sent shockwaves through the Rooskey area at the time. Community support for the family has remained strong throughout their long campaign.

As the cold case review proceeds, the Farrell family say they will continue to cooperate fully and remain hopeful that long-standing questions surrounding Liam Farrell’s death will finally be addressed.
