Temporary works will be considered for a road in Leitrim that has not seen any improvement works for the past 40 years, a meeting of the Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District was told.
Cllr Sean McGowan requested that a short section of the L-34702-0 road from Culmore to Finnalaghta in Annaduff be included in the 2026 road works programme for resurfacing.
“The Finnalaghta end of this public road in a deplorable condition with no repairs carried out on it for upwards on 40 years,” his motion stated.
While the total length of the road is 1.4km, Cllr McGowan explained that the section which has not received maintenance amounts to only 400 to 500 metres.

He noted that the upper portion of the road has been maintained, while the lower end remains in a “deplorable condition.”
“The road is popular with pedestrians,” said Cllr McGowan. “People are extremely disappointed that the road has been neglected,” he added.
In response, the Roads Department confirmed that the road is not included in the current three-year programme covering the period from 2025 to 2027, as approved by the elected members.
However, District Engineer Emma Donohoe stated that temporary measures could be examined in advance of a full resurfacing under the next three-year roads programme.

“We can include this road on the next three year program, however, if additional funding was to become available in 2027 Road Works Program, this road can be considered for resurfacing. The local community can also apply for a CIS scheme which requires a contribution from the community,” the response stated.
