Homeowners should have electrical wiring checked if living in older homes, says Leitrim councillor

It was suggested at a meeting in Donegal that the council run a public information campaign reminding homeowners to have their electrical systems checked, particularly in respect of older homes, and advised other councils to do the same.

Electrical checks should be carried out in elderly persons' homes

A Leitrim councillor spoke out at the Carrick-on-Shannon meeting after concerns were raised at the condition of electrical wiring in older homes across Donegal. 

It was suggested at a meeting in Donegal that the council run a public information campaign reminding homeowners to have their electrical systems checked, particularly in respect of older homes, and advised other councils to do the same.

Cllr Gary Prior said: "A number of homes have recently come to the attention of Donegal County Council due to wiring failures which pose a serious safety risk, particularly for elderly people living on their own."

Speaking to the Leitrim Observer, he said that he was advised of a number of cases in Leitrim where there is a need for an electrical wiring upgrade. "When the fuse board were being checked, it came to light that the wiring might need to be replaced so it's no harm to get them looked at it."

To apply for assistance with checking or upgrading electrical wiring for an older person's home in County Leitrim, you should apply for the Housing Aid for Older People Grant administered by Leitrim County Council.
