An Garda Síochána from the Sligo Leitrim Division has issued a warning on social media, urging motorists to be mindful of the condition of their tyres.
Over the weekend, the Sligo Leitrim Roads Policing Unit stopped a vehicle with excessively worn tyres and shared photographs of their condition on Facebook.
According to the Road Safety Authority, the minimum legal tyre tread depth is 1.6 mm. However, for safety reasons, it is recommended that tyres have at least 3.0 mm of tread, while most new tyres measure approximately 8.0 mm.
Tyres should also be free of cuts, bulges, or tears, as driving with defective or worn tyres can result in a fine of €80 and up to four penalty points.
