Leitrim nursing home commended for resident care in HIQA report

A nursing home in south Leitrim has received a largely positive report from the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA), published on February 23.

The unannounced inspection took place on November 7, 2025, at Lough Erril Nursing Home in Mohill. The centre caters for residents with varying levels of dependency, ranging from low to maximum.

On the date of inspection, 47 residents were living in the nursing home. The facility comprises six twin bedrooms and 37 single bedrooms, with all resident accommodation located on the ground floor.

The report stated: “The inspector found that residents living in this centre were well cared for and supported to live a good quality of life, by a dedicated team of staff who knew them well.” It noted that residents were “highly complimentary” of the direct care they received and described staff as “kind and attentive” to their needs.

The inspector observed that care provided by staff was person-centred, patient and respectful. Residents were afforded freedom in decorating their rooms, had access to the garden, and visitors were permitted at any time.

The report also found that governance and management at the centre were well organised, with a sufficient number of staff on duty on the day of inspection.

Of the 11 regulations assessed, three were found to be substantially compliant, with the remaining regulations deemed compliant.

Areas identified for improvement included record-keeping, where the provider had failed to obtain two written references for each staff member. The inspector also noted that some improvements were required to ensure residents’ contracts of care were accurate, that staff vetting procedures were adequate and in line with regulations, and that all contracts of care clearly outlined the bedroom number and room occupancy agreed upon at admission.

All other areas were compliant in what was described as a mostly glowing report for the Mohill nursing home.
