Cloone's first St Patrick’s Day Parade to feature 'Surprise’ St Patrick

Over 20 floats confirmed as village prepares for historic 5pm celebration on March 17

Cloone's first St Patrick’s Day Parade to feature surprise ‘Famous’ St Patrick

Cloone Village

Cloone is set to make history this St Patrick’s Day as the village prepares to host its very first parade. The inaugural Cloone St Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Tuesday, March 17, at 5pm, with organisers promising a family-friendly celebration and a strong community turnout.

Speaking to the Leitrim Observer, Event Organizer Liam O’Donnell said the idea came from a small group within the village who felt it was time Cloone joined other towns in celebrating Ireland’s national day with its own parade. “It was really a community effort,” he said. “A group of us came together a few weeks ago and thought, why not? Everyone else has a parade — so we said Cloone should do it like everyone else.”

The event is being organised in conjunction with the Cloone Community Centre, with a sub-committee working through the centre to coordinate logistics, including insurance — which O’Donnell noted is now an essential part of organising public events. “In fairness, the Community Centre has been a great support to us, especially with insurance. It’s expensive enough to run an event like this, but the council have helped us out a bit with the grant,” he said. To raise additional funds, organisers will host a coffee morning on March 8 to support the running costs of the parade.

Over 20 Floats Confirmed

The response from the community has been strong, with over 20 floats already confirmed. Participants include local businesses, Macra groups from Cloone and Carrigallen, community organisations, vintage tractor and car owners, horse riders and a range of local clubs and groups.

“There’s huge support,” O’Donnell said. “Everyone is happy to chip in and show their support for the event.” Prizes will be awarded to the top three floats on the day.

Fun for All the Family

Organisers are promising a lively atmosphere, with an ice cream truck, face painting and plenty of entertainment for children and families. The 5pm start time also allows people to attend morning parades elsewhere before heading to Cloone for an evening celebration.

While Cloone may be a small village, O’Donnell said it is well known nationally for events such as the Cloone Show — and he is confident the parade will draw a strong crowd. “We’re expecting a big turnout. Cloone is well able to celebrate,” he said.

A Big Surprise in Store

Adding to the excitement, organisers have hinted at a surprise appearance on the day. The identity of both the Grand Marshal and the person portraying St Patrick is being kept under wraps — but O’Donnell has promised it will be a crowd-pleaser. “There is a famous person who will be St Patrick on the day,” he revealed. “I can guarantee people will love who it is.”

Anyone wishing to take part in the parade can register via the Cloone St Patrick’s Day Facebook page or contact the organisers directly. Entries are welcome from businesses, social clubs, vintage vehicle owners and community groups. As Cloone prepares to host its first parade, organisers are encouraging the community to come out in force and support what they hope will become an annual tradition. “It’s our patron saint,” O’Donnell said. “We have to celebrate that — and we’re well able to celebrate in Cloone.”
