Funding decision pending for new pedestrian bridge in Leitrim town

Leitrim County Council is currently awaiting confirmation on whether funding will be available for a new pedestrian bridge in Manorhamilton.

At a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, Cllr Eddie Mitchell requested that the Council provide the Committee with an update on the safe active travel measures being considered or planned at Curley Bridge on the N16, near Manorhamilton Mart.

His motion raised questions about how users of the proposed SLNCR Greenway will safely access Manorhamilton town along the N16, and how the existing Curley Bridge will accommodate pedestrian and cycling traffic in this constrained location.

He also asked whether design options such as bridge widening, the addition of a cantilevered pedestrian and cycling structure, or the construction of a separate foot and cycling bridge at this site have been examined.

Cllr Mitchell was informed that the Council has submitted a feasibility and options report to the Active Travel Department of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for their consideration.

In the report, the Council recommends constructing a new standalone pedestrian bridge at Curley Bridge on Station Road, at an estimated cost of €739,168, including VAT. 

The Council now awaits a response and approval from TII in order to progress this project further.
