IRA volunteers who fought in the War of Independence
Sinn Féin will hold its annual Easter 1916 Commemoration in Drumshanbo on Sunday, April 5, inviting members of the public to gather in remembrance of those who fought for Irish freedom.
The event will begin at 3pm, with attendees assembling at the Primary School on the Drumcong Road before proceeding in a commemorative march to St Patrick’s Church, where a ceremony will take place at the graveside of local republican Jim Vaugh.
The proceedings will be chaired by Councillor Brendan Barry, with the keynote address to be delivered by Meath East TD and Sinn Féin spokesperson on Education, Darren O’Rourke.
Organisers said the commemoration will honour the sacrifice of the men and women of the 1916 Rising, while also reflecting on the continued relevance of the Proclamation, particularly its commitments to equality, national sovereignty and unity.
The annual event forms part of wider commemorations taking place across the country to mark the anniversary of the Easter Rising. All are welcome to attend.
