A newly established children's group in North Leitrim called Killargue Baby and Toddler Group is now open in the village on Thursday.
Speaking to the Leitrim Observer, Jemima Tahany, Chairperson of the Killargue Community Development said that she identified a gap in community supports locally, having a six month old baby girl herself.
She told us: "Leitrim Childcare Committee advertised that their funding was opening. My daughter was six months old at the time and I was looking to see if there was a group in Manorhamilton but there was only a walking group on a Friday and I'm not great for walking," she said.
Established by Killargue Community Development Association, Killargue Baby and Toddler group is run Thursdays 10.30-12.30pm (except on the 3rd Thursday of each month).
The group is a safe space where mums, dads and caregivers can meet each other whilst their baby/toddler has space to move and socialise with other children.
Each week has a different theme, with varying toys to offer fun and exploration and it is hoped to deliver information led classes soon about related topics; baby massage, weaning, sleeping etc.
She added: "We actually had a toy sale in December as a fundraiser for the hall. It's our second year doing that and it's generated a lot of money for the hall and helps us keep the door open. For the baby and toddler group we ask just €2 per family that goes towards tea and coffee for the adults and we provide drinks and snacks for the children too."
She thanked Tracey McPartland, Public Health Nurse in Manorhamilton, who she said "gave me great advice and was really really helpful. She wants to visit and do a talk at some point about mums' and dads' wellness and things like that."
She concluded: "It's not my group; it's our group. We are lucky that we have Tús workers who help to clean up afterwards and the mums and dads are also very helpful too. It's great and helps build the community so it's going very well so far."
No need to prior book - just turn up. Suitable from 6mths up to 5 years of age. Please contact Jemima if you have any questions on 0830457479.
