A new car park at a Leitrim hiking trail is nearing completion, a meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District has heard.
The car park, which has been in the works for a number of years, will provide 17 parking spaces along with two accessible parking spaces.
At April’s meeting, Cllr Paddy Farrell called on the District Engineer to seek a source of funding that will enable the completion of the works at the Sheemore amenity car park. His motion added that this should include the rebuilding of the wall between the entrance and exit, and the associated roadside drainage works.
District Engineer Emma Donohoe confirmed that the car park is near completion and that the walls will be adjusted for the entrance and exit of the car park, and that drainage works have been completed.

A response from the Roads department confirmed, “The new Sheemore car park which was funded under the National Outdoor Recreation Funding is nearing completion. This facility will provide 17 car park spaces, two accessible car parking spaces and cycle parking.
“The existing stone wall was altered to accommodate the entrance and exit accesses to the car park. The remaining wall was to be retained.”
The response further noted that Leitrim County Council will endeavour to seek a suitable funding source to rebuild the remaining wall at the car park.
“The roadside drainage will be assessed and a future Drainage Grant can be allocated at this location if it is deemed necessary,” the response concluded.

Cllr Maeve Reynolds commented that it is “great the car park is there and Sheemore is becoming a lot more accessible because it is a fantastic amenity that is underutilised.”
The motion was also seconded by Cllr Sean McGowan.
