Drivers have been travelling at speed through a housing estate in North Leitrim where a 30km/h speed limit is in place, leading to calls for increased safety measures.
At a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, Cllr James Gilmartin asked that Leitrim County Council’s District Engineer investigate the installation of speed ramps or other appropriate traffic calming measures within the Stonebridge estate in Dromahair.
“Residents have expressed concerns regarding excessive vehicle speeds within the estate, creating safety risks for pedestrians, children, and cyclists,” his motion stated.
“Introducing suitable traffic calming measures would help reduce speeds and improve road safety for residents living in the Stonebridge estate."

Cllr Gilmartin told the meeting that he had been contacted by the Residents’ Association in relation to the safety risk to pedestrians and children.
His motion was seconded by Cllr Mary Bohan. “Driver care is essential. Most drivers take care but some forget they’re driving through a housing estate where there’d likely be children,” she commented.
A response from the Roads department noted that the speed limit in the estate is 30km/h. The response further confirmed that the Council can review the location to determine if traffic calming measures are suitable or if enforcement of the existing speed limit is the appropriate course of action.
“2026 Clar funding is also available to the local communities if they wish to apply for traffic calming funding,” the response concluded.
