Last Friday evening Leitrim Village was plunged into blackness, without warning, for over three hours! This did not deter the plans of the Leitrim Cares fundraising group, who had organised to hold the final part of their Christmas fundraising spree, in aid of the Capuchin Day Centre Dublin; better known to many as Brother Kevin's Centre.
The raffle was to be conducted in the presence of Ballinamore priest Fr Seán Kelly, Provincial Minister at Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. Due to a bereavement in the Capuchin Order, Fr Seán was unable to be there to accept the cheque for €7,150, the proceeds of the fundraising efforts of Leitrim Cares, on behalf of the Capuchin Day Centre. At short notice, Santa Claus was located and was there to keep a watchful eye on proceedings! Some Ukrainian children appeared to see what was happening when the beautiful crib/nativity scene was a flurry of activity and lit up by head torches, lamps and mobile phones! To their delight they had a surprise meeting with Santa.
The winners of the raffle were: Ist prize, John Gilmartin (a full lamb); 2nd prize, Ann Marie Goldrick (Meat Voucher); 3rd prize, Fr Frankie Murray, (Fuel); 4th Seán Forde, (hamper) and 5th prize went to Alan Kelly, Whiskey.
A Spinathon event was held in both Drumshanbo and Leitrim Village a fortnight ago and this, combined with the raffle, raised the total of €7,150. This will surely go a long way towards the work of the Capuchin Day Centre, established by Brother Kevin Crowley, over 50 years ago.
Brother Kevin, now in his 87th year, retired last August, but the work continues, providing breakfast and dinner to 700-900 people daily. They also provide family services, clothing, showers and advocacy for people in crisis, for those who have no home or are socially excluded. They also provide 1,500 food parcels weekly to those less fortunate than ourselves. Brother Kevin is synonymous with Christianity, compassion and humanitarianism and the Leitrim Cares group have been funding thousands of euro for his Capuchin Day Centre every Christmas.
