The final element of works which included the drainage of the river flowing from the village of Ballinaglera and the clearance of debris around the bridge was completed just before the Christmas break.
Many local people will be relieved with the completion of these works following the flooding of August 2021 around the Ballinaglera parish including the flooding of the local bar and shop, Rinn’s and the threatened damage to local homes.
The OPW funded works began earlier this year which included works around the stony river and the ‘Leitrim Way’ bridge.
In August 2021 a freak cloud burst brought a substantial amount of rain in a very short time resulting in extensive flood damage to agricultural land, diverting the Stoney River and bringing tonnes of debris from the nearby mountain areas.
The funding announced by Minister Patrick O’Donovan and the OPW allocated three separate funding tranches totalling over €152,000 providing clearance of several drainage channels from properties to the lake, underpinning of Leitrim Way pedestrian bridge alongside the various works within the village itself.
Fine gael Cllr Enda McGloin stated, “I wish to compliment Engineer John Mulvihill and his team at Leitrim Co Council for the efficient and effective manner that works were completed.
“In conclusion I thank Minister for the OPW, Patrick O’Donovan for his positive response to my representations after the flooding debacle and the assistance of our local government TD, Frank Feighan in securing the funds."
