Six years after it was first put forward and agreed upon at a Council meeting there are still no road signs displaying Leitrim as the birthplace of 1916 Signatory Sean MacDiarmada.

Sinn Féin Cllr Padraig Fallon has asked Leitrim County Council to erect signage recognising the birthplace and contribution of the 1916 hero at the county boundaries.
He submitted the amendment for the County Development Plan, which will undergo public consultation and should be implemented for the next six years. But the submission was disregarded as a “corporate matter.”

The councillor along with supporting colleagues were confused about this response from the local authority.
Cllr Fallon said he has been “six years asking for this to be done at municipal and Council meetings.”
Cllr Justin Warnock said he was disappointed with the reply, while Cllr Des Guckian asked “who is corporate?”
Cllr Sean McDermott said there should be a sign at Knock Airport directing people to the homestead of Sean MacDiarmada - as well as every approach road into the county.
He said Mac Diarmada “is the best brand name in Leitrim.”

Director of Services Joseph Gilhooly said it “is not a matter for the county development plan.”
He asked Cllr Fallon to “take it away” and bring it up at a future meeting. He added the Council would like to “think about it and carry out an analysis.”
No timeframe was given for this consideration but Cllr Fallon accepted the local authority's recommendation and said he would not hold up the rest of the meeting.
