Take On Addiction is a 30-day challenge, taking place in the month of April. Participants can run, walk, cycle, or choose their own time-based activity to complete.
During the month, participants are encouraged to fundraise and share their stories and perspectives, to help reduce the stigma associated with addictive behaviours.
Funds raised for Take On Addiction will assist SMART Recovery organisations to continue facilitating change for people who want to find life beyond addiction.
Importantly, Take On Addiction is intended to start a conversation with the individual, communities, workplaces, media and policy makers to reduce the stigma associated with addiction, which is a significant barrier for people with addictive behaviours seeking help and leading productive and healthy lives.
SMART Recovery Ireland will be launching this campaign officially on the 25th of March from 10.30am-12pm. Frank Feighan TD will be the guest speaker and will discuss how stigma affects addiction recovery. The event will be held in the Landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim, all are welcome.
ABOUT SMART RECOVERY IRELAND
SMART Recovery Ireland is a self-help, mutual-aid programme that offers the chance for people to work together to examine and change problem behaviours. Group participants are there to help themselves and each other. Problem behaviours may relate to drinking, drug taking, gambling, food, shopping, internet, sex and other issues. SMART also helps participants manage associated problems, such as depression, anxiety, and anger.
SMART Recovery is a practical and solution-focused program. It uses evidence based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) tools and techniques to help people achieve their goals. SMART encourages individuals to determine a recovery pathway that is right for their needs and beliefs. Some may choose to use the program in combination with other mutual-support groups, or in conjunction with professional treatment. SMART Recovery recognizes that there are many pathways to recovery.
SMART Recovery Ireland is an organization funded through the National Office of Social Inclusion. SMART Recovery Ireland is part of an international group of SMART Recovery affiliates, under the auspices of SMART Recovery International.
