St Patrick's Day parade in Carrick-on-Shannon
Leitrim County Council is providing money for tourist events in each of the three municipal districts this year to help promote festivities post-covid.
The Carrick Municipal District funding was announced last week as a total of €5,700.
This money has been distributed out between six events, four of which are in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Carrick-on-Shannon St Patrick’s Day parade received €500, Leitrim Association of People with Disabilities Day event on May 29 will get €500.
Carrick Carnival festival is set to get €2,000 while the Carrick Camino is in for €750.
Leitrim Village’s festival will get €1,500 this Summer and Lough Rynn Harvest Festival will get €1,000.
The funding was welcomed but Cllr Enda Stenson said it did “seem weighted in one area.”
He asked if there were not other events in Mohill or Cloone or around the district that applied for the grants.
He asked about other St Patrick's Day parades “did they apply?”
He also inquired if Agricultural Shows could be included or what was termed as a tourist event.
Cllr Finola Armstrong McGuire welcomed the funding and said many events may not have been ready to go before the deadline for the grants.
Cllr Sean McGowan said it was a pity more St Patrick’s Day parades were not included around the district such as Mohill's parade.
Director of Services Joseph Gilhooly said these were all the applications the council received.
They did get an application for an event at Lough Key Forest Park this summer which they re-directed to Roscommon County Council.
He said it is hoped more funding will made available to events later this year.
