THE seizure of 19 dogs by gardai and council officials in Pallasgreen was part of a suspected illegal dog-breeding operation, Limerick Live has learned.

The five Pit Bull Terriers, two Alsatians and two Rottweilers were seized under Section 45 of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013, following an inspection by veterinary officials.

Bruff-based Inspector Gearoid Thompson said a large number of personnel were involved in the the joint operation.

"I want to compliment gardai who responded swiftly and efficiently to a complaint of alleged mistreatment of animals.

"It was a joint operation with Limerick City and County Council staff. Veterinary officials were also in attendance," said Insp Thompson, when contacted by Limerick Live.

The inspector urged people to contact gardai if they "have any concerns about the mistreatment of animals".

No arrests have been made in respect of the investigation, however, gardai are following a definite line of enquiry.
