INFLATION, planning, finance and taxation were all discussed at the first Construction Industry Federation (CIF) Mid-West dinner in 20 years which was a resounding success, according to organisers.
Over 200 local construction stakeholders from across the Mid-West region attended the event which was held in the Strand Hotel in Limerick city.
CIF Mid-West Branch Chairman Michael Joyce hosted the event and said the industry has been experiencing high levels of material inflation. He called for “fair, workable price variation clauses in our public works contracts that spread the risk evenly between all the construction stakeholders on a construction project”.
Mr Joyce also spoke of the need for a radical overhaul of the current planning system.
The proposed new Planning and Development Bill will, he said, hopefully go some way to addressing this, but adequate resourcing of An Bord Pleanála and local authorities will also be key.
He said too many projects are being held up with judicial reviews and he outlined how the availability of affordable finance remains an issue.
New CIF National President Joe Conway of Dornan Engineering delivered his inaugural speech to Mid-West members as president at the event.
“The National Development Plan is critical to providing necessary infrastructure such as water, energy and schools to support housing for all, climate action, FDI and economic growth.
“The capital pipeline of work under the NDP is essential to providing business certainty for the industry and must be published in real-time. A clear pipeline of construction-ready work will be critical in supporting the industry’s investment in its people, processes and technology; and drive greater adoption of digital and off-site construction methods to ultimately deliver on the built environment for people in Ireland.”
Minister of State and Limerick city Fine Gael TD Kieran O'Donnell attended the event and spoke about the importance of the construction industry to the Mid-West Region with over 16,000 people working in the Industry in the Mid-West.
Local companies O’Connell Quarries, TJ O’Mahonys and Construction Professionals Skillnet sponsored the event.
