Limerick motorists warned over scam texts about M50 toll charges

MOTORISTS in Limerick and across Ireland are being warned of a new scam which targets those using the M50 toll plaza near Dublin Airport. It’s been reported that some drivers are receiving a text from fraudsters telling them they owe money.

The communication refers to outstanding charges accrued in 2022 and includes a clickable link to ‘pay’ for the arrears.

The receiver of the message is also warned if they do not pay, they’ll face fines. It is sent from an Irish mobile number.

One recipient says these texts target people who do not own a car, or who have used the M50 in the capital.

They said: “I don't even have a car! I've also recently gotten similar texts claiming to be from An Post and AIB bank - which I'm not even a customer of.”

A notice on the eFlow website says: “We are aware of suspicious text messages claiming to be from eFlow. Please do not open any links from these messages and contact us if you are in doubt.”

The M50 toll plaza is located between junctions six and seven on the motorway .

Unlike on the Limerick Tunnel and the M7 motorway, there are no physical barriers. Instead, cameras detect and identify cars from their registration plates.
