THOUSANDS of volunteers in communities across Limerick got plastic bags, wore high-vis vests and picked up rubbish around the city and county this Good Friday morning.
Launched at Hedge School Cottage in Newtown, Ballybrown, JP McManus and Paul O’Connell paid a visit as locals prepared to tidy and the rugby legend explained the importance of the annual Team Limerick Clean-Up event.
“It's just two things to it, the city and county gets a bit of a cleanup on Good Friday but also kids learn the right habits around cleaning and tidying their local area and having a bit of pride in place and learn a little about littering and not littering and taking a little bit of responsibility for that,” he said.
The businessman and Irish rugby coach visited several communities across Limerick where they met with volunteers as they picked up rubbish from streets, roads and the community.
“On Good Friday morning, we get slagged about not doing any work but it is brilliant. When you drive past an area and you see five or six bags of rubbish, they're ready to be collected. It is great. And the areas we've driven by anyway certainly look better.
"Slowly but surely we're addressing it by doing the cleanup, but also addressing it by giving people and giving kids the right habits around litter,” Paul told the Limerick Leader/Limerick Live.

The idea came about over a cup of tea between JP McManus, Paul and Helen O’Donnell in a bid to tackle the litter issue but also make Limerick a cleaner place to live in.
They toyed with the idea of running it across a number of weekends but given schools and a number of companies close on Good Friday, a one day, large event was decided upon.
Over 21,500 volunteers took part in this year's Team Limerick Clean-Up.
