Limerick business people are being sought to sponsor roundabouts in the city

LIMERICK City and County Council is seeking expressions of interest from business people interested in sponsoring local roundabouts.

The local authority confirmed the news at this week's metropolitan district meeting in response to a question from Labour councillor Joe Leddin.

He had sought information on the scheme as it is now and how often business sponsors replant and maintain these roundabouts.

In a written reply from the local authority's director of services Nuala O'Connell, he was told: "The council want to hear from businesses and organisations who wish to enhance the local environment while benefitting from the advertising opportunities being offered. The scheme shall provide businesses and organisations an excellent opportunity to promote themselves through their association with the landscaping and maintenance of roundabouts."

Staff at any company which agrees to sponsor a roundabout will be responsible for having a biodiversity friendly design, Ms O'Connell added, saying the sponsorship period would be for three years.

"Subject to satisfactory maintenance of the roundabout, the council may, at its discretion, extend the sponsorship for a specified period. Each applicant can tender for one or more roundabouts. Joint applications will also be accepted where a maximum of two businesses or organisations wish to sponsor a roundabout jointly," the executive said, with the responsibility for landscaping and maintenance falling on the sponsoring firm.
