Limerick parklet to offer castle vista for first time ever

A NEW parklet which is planned for Askeaton will offer an unobstructed view of the castle from the main street, for the first time ever.

To make way for the new amenity, a two-storey end- of-terrace derelict house will be demolished.

The house, located at West Square at its junction with Main Street, has been certified as structurally unsound and was entered into the derelict sites register in 2017.

The original plan was to renovate and restore the house but it has since been decided that it is not suitable for such works.

Now, Limerick City and County Council says the house will be demolished to make way for a 288 square metre parklet which will be situated within an architectural conservation area.

The existing riverbank stone walls will be retained with the new park creating a link between the town and the River Deel, while framing views of Askeaton Castle.

Plans for the parklet include the construction of an end of terrace 1.5m wide two storey abutment, feature walls/seats built from existing stone walls and associated works comprising of services, boundary treatment and hard and soft landscaping works.

The cost of creating the parklet and demolishing the house is €250,000 and monies have been allocated by the government.

Plans for the parklet were formally approved by Adare/Rathkeale councillors at their monthly meeting.

The tender for the works is expected to go out within the next few weeks.

Councillor Adam Teskey says he hopes the final plans will include more parking for people in the surrounding areas and will progress the provision of parking spaces in the town.

In a submission, he requested that land across the road from the planned parklet be used for parking spaces and electric vehicle charging points.
