A bypass of Adare is included in the project
THE PLANNED €450m Foynes to Limerick road has got the green light to proceed to the next stage of delivery, Limerick Live has learned.
The Limerick City and County Council project, which dates back to 2014, was approved by An Bord Pleanála in August 2022. This approval was subsequently challenged by three separate judicial reviews in the High Court. It is understood these proceedings have now been withdrawn.
The 35km stretch of road, including 17kms of motorway, includes a bypass of several towns and villages.
Minister for State Niall Collins said it is "huge news" for the region.
"Its importance cannot be understated. It hugely improves our connectivity and our competitiveness. It links the port of Foynes - which is one of the most significant ports in Ireland to the motorway network. This is also in parallel with the upgrade of the railway line. It is a double boost for the region," said Mr Collins.
It also raises hopes that the Adare bypass could be completed in time for the Ryder Cup in Adare Manor in 2027.
"It is quote possible that the contract for the construction of the road may be subdivided into a number of stages in terms of breaking it down it into parts so the Adare bypass section could be one contract. It may afford an opportunity for the early delivery of it in time for the Ryder Cup 2027.
"It is is really, really positive new because road projects are so important in terms of our competitiveness, our connectivity and bringing added value to the region because Limerick and the Mid-West has been outperforming other regions. We see that with the amount of foreign direct investment. Foynes is going to be a major hub for the development of offshore wind energy which has unlimited potential," he said.
The project can now progress to the next stage of delivery.
"What will happen now is the CPOs (compulsory purchase orders) and tendering process from contractors. It is at a time as well when we see some unspent funds in the National Development Plan. The public finances are healthy so the project won't be delayed due to funding issues. I hope it is expedited as quickly as possible," said Mr Collins.
