Limerick charity runner doing all 32 counties chalks Donegal off her list

Charity runner doing all 32 counties chalks Donegal off the list in Ballyshannon

Theresa Hughes has completed races in 18 counties now and took part in Friday's Ballyshannon 5k

A YOUNG Limerick woman who is running a road race in every county in Ireland for charity has crossed Donegal off her list.

Theresa Hughes, from Abbeyfeale, runs for West Limerick AC and took part in the Ballyshannon 5k on Friday night, completing the course in 23:24 in the rain. She has now competed in 18 of the 32 counties.

“As someone who only started running properly in October '22 and then was out for a month and a half due to a broken ankle, this year I'm setting myself a challenge,” Theresa said.

“I'm running a race - between 5 and 10k in distance as I'm fairly new to running - in each of the 32 counties to raise money for Diabetes Ireland, Alzheimer's Society of Ireland, and Rape Crisis Midwest, and I have to complete them all by the end of December.

“I am doing all of this to raise some money for three charities that are very close to my heart - Diabetes Ireland, Alzheimer's Society of Ireland and Rape Crisis Midwest

“I lost my dad in 2007 at the age of 48 to diabetic hypoglycemia (extreme low blood sugars) as he was Type 1 diabetic. I too am a Type1 so this charity is extra special! My grandmother, who passed away in 2014, suffered from dementia/Alzheimer's in her final years, and thirdly, several people I know have benefited from the support provided by Rape Crisis Midwest.

“All funds raised will be split equally between the three charities and allow them to continue to provide their support services as well as funding research into hopefully finding a cure or prevention for Diabetes and Alzheimer's

“Every bit of support is much appreciated! It may not seem like much but considering only a few months ago I struggled to run 5k even once a month, doing a race almost every week will be tough going for me!

“In Ballyshannon, it was a pity the weather was so bad on the day but everyone was really friendly anyways, I definitely felt welcome despite being a blow-in!”
