The bridge in Cappamore had had 'reached end of life' I PICTURE: Google
IT WAS business as usual on Cappamore's Main Street this Thursday after over a month of necessary disruption to facilitate a bridge rehabilitation project.
The street was closed from Monday, June 19 to this Thursday, August 10, when it reopened ahead of schedule.
A council spokesperson said: "The bridge had reached end of life and required the rehabilitation works to be undertaken". The estimated cost of the works will be in the order of €140,000 to €160,000.
The location and unusual nature of the bridge abutting houses on either side of it meant that additional care had to be taken when carrying out the rehabilitation works, they added.
The works were due to take place last year but it was decided to postpone the works to allow additional investigation works to be undertaken and to carry out the works outside of the school timetable.
"The additional investigations were required to establish if works were required to the bridge abutment and to confirm utility locations and the associated works with these," said the council spokesperson.
The main works carried out in the last number of weeks involved the replacement of the deck and parapets.
The bridge has reopened well ahead of the busiest day in the local calendar - the Cappamore Show on Saturday, August 19.
