A FORMER Munster Rugby player is backing the Netwatch Family Carer of the Year Awards again this year.
Irish rugby star Mick Galwey is an ambassador for the Netwatch Family Carer of the Year Awards, now in its 16th year.
The nominations for the awards, which aims to showcase the ‘Trojan work” that carers do, are now open. The awards are on November 30. Last year’s winner was Colette O'Shea from Lisnagry, Limerick.
Family Carers Ireland, who host the annual awards, announced news: “This event is a cornerstone of our mission to honour and recognise the remarkable contribution of every single family carer nationwide,” said Catherine Cox, Head of Communications and Policy at Family Carers Ireland.
“It is an opportunity for the public to nominate and celebrate the family carers and young carers in their lives, who consistently go the extra mile in caring for their loved ones - we must recognise the physical and emotional demands they face.
“Providing support and resources to family carers is imperative and we must ensure they have access to vital services such as respite care, appropriate financial support and assistance in navigating the challenges of our healthcare system,” Ms Cox concluded.
Netwatch Brand Ambassador and Irish rugby legend, Mick Galwey, said: “These awards serve as a platform to showcase the Trojan work of Ireland’s family carers.
“Their resilience, compassion and dedication must not go unnoticed.
“This event is a vital annual fixture in the Netwatch calendar and resonates with our own commitment to fostering a caring and compassionate society, where every individual's contributions are valued and appreciated.”
Mick Galwey is the only ever winner of an All-Ireland in both rugby and Gaelic football.
He won an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship with the Kerry team in 1986. Now at 56-years-old, Galwey works with Netwatch security systems, who now support the Family Carer Awards.
Hosting the awards this year is RTÉ Prime Time presenter Miriam O’Callaghan, who said she was ‘deeply inspired’ by the work that carers do across Ireland:
“It is time to bring their incredible contributions into the spotlight, acknowledging their resilience, compassion and commitment.”
