New council scheme offers ‘age-friendlier accommodation’ for Limerick residents

Council scheme offers ‘age-friendlier accommodation’ in Limerick

The new scheme is located at Newtown Meadows in Castletroy

HOMEOWNERS older than 55 who find their residence too large for them can now request the Limerick City and County Council to purchase their home in return for a life-long tenancy in a managed Older Persons Scheme.

The Private Rightsizing scheme is entirely voluntary and in partnership with Clann, a division of Clúid Housing that provides dedicated age-friendly homes for people 55 years and older.

The scheme is located at Newtown Meadows, Castletroy includes one and two bedroom apartments becoming available in November and December 2023.

The scheme in Newtown Meadows is being delivered in phases, phase one apartment block is due for completion in next month and phase two apartment block is due for completion this December.

Launching the latest scheme, Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell said: “This scheme is the fourth in a number of schemes across Limerick that the Council are working on in partnership with Clann in building age-friendly communities. The private rightsizing scheme is an entirely voluntary scheme which means that you do not have to move unless you choose to do so. The private rightsizing scheme provides a great opportunity for people to voluntarily rightsize to age friendlier accommodation.”

Caroline Curley, Director of Housing in Limerick City and County Council said: “Limerick City and County Council and Clann Housing are committed to empowering residents to live for as long as they possibly can in sustainable, high quality, affordable homes in their own communities.

“The Council has an informal register of interest of over 100 private households enquiring about rightsizing options. We are confident that there is significant latent demand for private rightsizing schemes.”

The closing date for receipt of applications from eligible candidates over the age of 55 is October 27 at 5pm.
