In Pictures: Limerick photograph recreating pic from 57 years ago unveiled

A RECREATION of a Limerick photograph taken 57 years after the original, has been unveiled at King’s Island.

Long-time fisherman Seany Quinlivan helped recreate a 1958 image showing anglers fishing for trout on Thomond Bridge back in 2015.

Now the two images sit proudly side-by-side in the King’s Island Community Centre.

Relatives of fishermen who appeared in the original photograph were in attendance at a special unveiling event.

King’s Island community worker Mary Hughes compared it to the famous Lunch atop a Skyscraper photograph taken in the skies above New York City in 1932.

“It’s an iconic image and to have that recreated was a magical thing,” she said.

She linked up with Seany and the pair set about getting the 2015 image printed in large scale alongside the 1958 version.

Relatives of people who were in the original image and the new one are being invited to attend the community centre during its 9.30am to 2pm opening hours and identify some of the fishermen pictured.

“What we hope to do is to trigger a rejuvenation of fishing in this community. The river is in people’s DNA. Their understanding of how the tides work, how the rivers work is etched onto the community’s being. We have the finest river running through our city and it should be utilised in the way it was origin ally,” she added.
