Hundreds in Limerick set to be without power for the day after Storm Debi hits

MORE than 1,200 people across the northside of Limerick are expected to be without power for the day after Storm Debi hit overnight.

While Limerick appears to have escaped the worst, ESB Networks has reported the loss of the electrical supply across Caherdavin just more 6am. Some 1,227 customers were impacted but power has since been restored.

Separately, 1,207 customers on the outskirts of the city close to Gillogue remain without power while more than 2,000 are without an electricity supply in Clare.

ESB has issued an apology, and said it aims to restore power "as quickly as possible."

It comes as Limerick avoided the worst of Storm Debi, with levels on the River Shannon high - but not overflowing.

A status red weather warning which had been in place for Limerick has now been lifted but a status orange warning remains in place.

Community centres and schools across Limerick have reported they will not likely open until 10am. The Limerick City library will remain closed until noon and public transport services are also impacted.

School buses will not run, while the University of Limerick Hospitals Group has said it's business as usual - but advised patients to only travel where it's safe to do so.
