In Pictures: Festive cheer in Limerick town as Christmas lights are switched on

THE FESTIVE season began in Newcastle West with the official lighting up of the Christmas tree at Desmond Castle in the town.

The family-friendly event was full of Christmas cheer as students from Scoil Mhuire agus Ide performed beautiful renditions of carol songs whilst children and adults joined in the fun and enjoyed light refreshments in the Castle.

Local TD and Minister-of-State Patrick O’Donovan had the honour of officially switching on the lights.

“On behalf of the Office of Public Works, we are delighted to see so many people here this evening. It is a big year for the Office of Public Works and Newcastle West as it’s the year we welcomed the largest number of visitors to Desmond Castle since we took it over a number of years ago," he said.

"Thanks to the people of Newcastle West for all their help and support that they’ve given to the OPW and our neighbours here in the town over the last number of years. We wanted to mark it this year with our very special Wicklow 40 foot Tree," he said.
